In spite of the Gujarat Titans' dismal showing in the 2024 IPL, mentor Gary Kirsten has backed skipper Shubman Gill.

According to Kirsten, Gill is relishing his newfound responsibility as captain and has fully accepted the role. "I think he has enjoyed the captaincy, it's something that takes time to really master, so I think he enjoyed it this season. He is a world-class player so I have no doubt that in the next 3 games, he will put in 1-2 good performances, no doubt," Kirsten said.

Gill's subpar performance at the crease has been a significant factor in GT's ludicrous position at the bottom of the points table. Gill has been unable to replicate his 890-run IPL 2023 record-setting performance in the IPL 2024 for GT. Gill has amassed a meagre 322 runs in 11 encounters, including two fiftys, at a strike rate of 137.61 and an average of 32.20.

Kirsten also thinks that bowling-up is one of the main reasons for the dismal show in this year’s IPL. "In the last IPL we defended four and chased down six games. This year we haven't defended a total yet but it is early days in the tournament. Last year we had a settled bowling line up. This year due to injuries and guys who we bank on in crucial overs, aren't necessarily ready to go," Kirsten added.

Gujarat will face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the important encounter on May 10.
