19th death anniversary of veteran politician Abdus Samad Azad tomorrow

Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: The 19th death anniversary of Abdus Samad Azad, a close associate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and one of the organizers of Liberation War, will be observed tomorrow with due respect.

Marking the day, Abdus Samad Azad Foundation will place floral wreaths and offer special prayer at his Banani graveyard at 9am tomorrow.

Leaders of the ruling Awami League and its associate bodies will attend the function.

A doa and milad mahfil will also be held at Kalabagan Lakeview Jame Masjid after Asr prayers.

He was born on January 15 in 1922 at Bhurakhali village under Jagannathpur upazila in Sunamganj district.

He was actively participated in the Language Movement in 1952 and suffered imprisonment. Abus Samad Azad was acting president of the then East Pakistan Jubo League in 1953.

Samad entered politics after electing then provincial council member as a nominated candidate of the Jukto Front in 1954. He was a labour affairs secretary of the East Pakistan Awami League between 1955 and 1957.

In 1956, the then Pakistan regime sent him jail as he led East Pakistan strike in that time.

After the Independence, Abdus Samad Azad elected member of the parliament from Sunamganj 2 and 3 constituencies as an Awami League nominated candidate in 1973.

Azad, who was political advisor and visiting ambassador of the Mujibnagar government, was one of the founders of the Mujibnagar government in 1971.

Samad was the first foreign minister of Bangladesh in December, 1971. He played pivotal role during 90's anti-military regime movement in Bangladesh. He became deputy leader of the Jatiya Sangsad in 1991 after winning election from Sunamganj-3.

Aazad again became foreign minister after winning eighth parliament elections from his constituency in 1996.

He was a chairman of the parliamentary standing committee of the water resources and the Expatriates welfare and Overseas Employment ministries during BNP-led four party alliance government and until his death.
The veteran politician passed away On April 27, 2005.
