Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said most of the problems of the prison system can be solved by stopping bribery and corruption.

The adviser made the remark while addressing a meeting with prison officials as the chief guest this morning at the Department of Prisons in Bakshibazar, Dhaka.

In his address, the adviser highlighted the broader implications of corruption, tying it to the recent social revolution.

“The recent Anti-discrimination Student Movement was not just about quotas,” he said.

“It was fueled by deeper issues, including bribery, corruption, and rising commodity prices. Bribery can not be allowed to continue; there is no alternative.”

The adviser stressed the importance of transforming prisons into true correctional facilities. He called for significant improvements in the quality of food provided to both prison guards and inmates, as well as enhanced training to develop their skills. He issued directives to ensure that the personal files, discipline, and welfare of prison employees are meticulously managed.

Speaking directly to the prison officials, Adviser Jahangir underscored their responsibility to maintain prison security and urged them to reject bribes to restore their honor.

“Bribery damages the reputation of both individuals and institutions,” he warned, calling on officials to take pride in their roles by upholding integrity.

During the meeting, he also listened to various demands and concerns raised by the prison officers and staff. Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Muhammad Motahar Hussain, along with other officials from various levels of the Department of Prisons, were present at the meeting.
