Dhaka, Bangaladesh Global: BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said that the BNP does not want the removal of the president at this time, as it could delay the transition to democracy and the upcoming national parliamentary election.
Speaking to reporters at the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday afternoon, Salahuddin said: "The post of president is a constitutional one, the highest institution in the country. If a vacancy is created through a sudden resignation, it would lead to a constitutional vacuum and a state crisis. The nation cannot afford for the transition to democracy to be delayed or hindered by such a crisis."
Addressing ongoing concerns about potential political conspiracies, Salahuddin said: "We urge everyone to remain vigilant. We stand united to ensure that the forces of fallen fascism and their allies cannot orchestrate any further conspiracies. All attempts will be countered collectively."
Earlier in the day, a BNP delegation met with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus. The delegation included BNP Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Salahuddin Ahmed.
When asked if the BNP sought the government’s opinion regarding the president’s resignation, Nazrul Islam responded: "Specifically, that wasn’t the focus. We emphasized that everyone should ensure no new constitutional or political crisis is created in the country. If such a situation arises, we will address it together."
