Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: India has emphasized the resolution of all issues in Bangladesh through democratic means, ensuring inclusive and participatory elections.
Speaking at a press briefing in New Delhi on Friday, India's Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated that India supports a stable, peaceful, inclusive, and progressive Bangladesh, where all problems are addressed through democratic processes and participatory elections.
In response to questions from journalists, Jaiswal expressed concerns over the law and order situation in Bangladesh. He noted, "The release of extremists convicted of serious crimes has further worsened the security situation."
Since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, following mass protests, tensions have been growing between Bangladesh and India over various issues. Amid these developments, officials from both countries' Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) met to review matters related to transboundary water-sharing agreements.
The two-day meeting, which began on Thursday in Kolkata, was led by Mohammad Abul Hossain, a member of Bangladesh's Joint Rivers Commission, and Sharad Chandra, a member of India's JRC. Both delegations comprised 11 members. Discussions focused on the renewal of the three-decade-old Ganges Water Treaty.
Spokesperson Jaiswal confirmed, "Both sides discussed the Ganges Water Treaty, water flow, and other matters of mutual interest."
Following the change of government, reports have emerged of attacks, vandalism, and arson targeting the homes and places of worship of religious minorities in Bangladesh. The Indian government has consistently expressed concern over these incidents and urged appropriate action.
During Friday's briefing, Jaiswal reiterated India's stance on minority rights, stating, "We expect the Bangladesh government to ensure thorough investigations into incidents of violence, murder, and arson—without any bias—and bring the perpetrators to justice."
