Sports Desk, Bangladesh Global: The Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) has finalised the 20-member national squad for the upcoming FIH Junior (U-21) Hockey World Cup, scheduled to be held in Tamil Nadu, India, from November 28 to December 10. The confirmation came through an official statement from the federation on Saturday.
Six players who featured in the Asian qualifiers in Oman failed to make the final cut — goalkeeper Nayon, Sumonto Chakma, Shahidul Islam, Taiyab Ali, Saddam Hossain, and Shimul Islam. Among them, midfielder Taiyab Ali recently represented Bangladesh’s senior side in the Asia Cup held in Bihar, India.
Sources within the federation said the final squad was mostly settled following the team’s four-match series in Malaysia earlier this year.
Speaking about the selection, BHF General Secretary Lt. Col. (retd.) Riazul Hasan said the coaching staff had the final say in team composition.
“The 20-member squad for the World Cup has been finalised, including two standby players,” Riazul said. “The coach has selected those he believes will perform best in the tournament.”
A total of 24 nations will take part in this year’s competition, divided into six groups. Bangladesh have been drawn in Group F alongside Australia, France, and South Korea.
The young Red and Greens will begin their campaign against Australia on November 29, before facing South Korea the following day and wrapping up the group stage against France on December 2.
