News Desk, Bangladesh Global: The European Union (EU) has deployed a large Election Observation Mission in Bangladesh for the national polls today. Ivars Ijabs, the Head of the Observation has remarked, "Today's 13th Parliamentary Elections mark a significant day for democracy in Bangladesh."
He made these remarks on Thursday after visiting the Curzon Hall at Dhaka University to monitor polling and expected a participatory and credible election. The observation team arrived at the center about half an hour before the start of the election and the returning officer turned the ballot boxes upside down in front of them and placed it for voting. Then, voting began at the scheduled time.
The EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has deployed more than 200 observers nationwide for this historic and crucial election. He expressed hope that participatory elections would be held not only in the capital but across the country. He also said that he would monitor the entire process for the rest of the day.
Ijabs told reporters, "Short-term observers will be present in almost every electoral area, in cities and villages. Their observations and reports throughout the day will be an important element in the impartial and fact-based assessment of this historic election."
