Prime Minister inaugurates Ekushey Book Fair

Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today inaugurated the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2026, the country’s largest book fair and annual gathering of book lovers and publishers in Dhaka.

The Bangla Academy organised the fair at its premises and the adjoining Suhrawardy Udyan. Fridays and Saturdays will feature a dedicated Children’s Corner from 11:00am to 1:30pm, hosting 63 institutions across 107 units.

At the opening ceremony, the prime minister presented the Bangla Academy Sahitya Puroshkar 2026 to nine distinguished personalities for their outstanding contributions to Bangla literature. A one-minute silence was observed in tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement, the Liberation War and the July mass uprising.

Cultural Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury urged people not to drift away from books in this era of rapid technological advancement, describing books as the beacon of knowledge that plays a vital role in the intellectual and human development of a nation. He added that the new government is working to expand literary and cultural practices, encourage new writers, strengthen research and translation activities, and ensure a strong digital presence of the Bangla language.
