News Desk, Bangladesh Global: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed a record victory on Monday in key elections in opposition-held West Bengal state after official trends and partial results showed a majority for his Hindu-nationalist party. Modi celebrated the BJP's first ever win in West Bengal by immediately making a speech from the BJP headquarters in New Delhi following the news.
"Today Bengal is entering a new era," Modi stated. "I aspire to make the day and night as one for Bengalis," he added.
This was the first election after a record deletion of 90 lakh voters in Bengal under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The BJP sweeped the majority mark by winning 202 seats and leading in 4 others, according to the Election Commission. The halfway mark stands at 148 in the 294-member House, but with counting of votes currently underway for 293 seats as polling in Falta was countermanded, the majority mark dropped to 147.
