News Desk, Bangladesh Global: The flood situation in the Sundarganj district of Gaibandha has deteriorated due to heavy rainfall and an influx of water from upstream.

Officially, 20,000 people from 4,900 families across six unions in the upazila are reported to be marooned. Unofficially, however, the number is estimated to exceed 25,000.

The government has already distributed 400 packets of dry food to support 20,000 people. Marooned families have begun relocating to higher ground, educational institutions, Water Development Board dams, and shelters.

The situation is dire for domestic animals, elderly individuals, children, and pregnant women. Floodwaters have inundated agricultural fields, causing widespread crop destruction. Additionally, river erosion has damaged numerous houses.

Annually, approximately 5,000 houses are engulfed by rivers, and thousands of acres of farmland are submerged due to flooding in this area.

Upazila Project Implementation Officer Walif Mondal said that based on the information of the chairmen of the flood-hit unions, it has been learned that 20,000 people of 4,900 families have become waterlogged.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tariqul Islam said the flood situation has been monitored round-the-clock. All measures have been taken locally. A list of flood-affected people have been sent to authorities.
