Awami League leader held by BGB while fleeing to India

Comilla’, Bangladesh Global: A local leader of the Awami League was apprehended by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while attempting to flee to India through the Nishchintpur border in Comilla’s Adarsha Sadar Upazila.

The incident took place on Thursday. Another individual was also detained alongside the leader.

AM Jaber Bin Jabbar, commander of Border Guard Bangladeh (BGB) Battalion 60, confirmed the news on Friday.

The detained Awami League leader has been identified as Md Tipu Sultan alias Tiger Tipu, 52, who served as the assistant organizational secretary of Ward No 8 in the Comilla Metropolitan Awami League.

He is a close associate of former Comilla MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar. Tiger Tipu is the son of Nasib Ullah from Thakurpara, a locality within the Comilla City Corporation. T

The other detainee is Md Marjanur Rahman, 48, son of Moshiur Rahman from Manra village in Shashidal, Brahmanpara upazila.

Tiger Tipu is notorious for his involvement in various criminal activities, including tender manipulation. He has been accused of taking part in armed violence and assaults, particularly against anti-discrimination student movements.

He allegedly terrorized locals in the Thakurpara area with regular displays of weapons, earning him his infamous nickname. Sources at the Kotwali Model police station confirmed that Tipu is currently facing two cases.

According to BGB sources, the two men were attempting to cross into India on Thursday evening.

BGB patrol team intercepted them with their motorcycle on a paved road in Nishchintpur, about 140 yards inside Bangladesh from Border Pillar 2078-M.

The detainees were later handed over to Kotwali Model police station for legal action.
