Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: Malaysia plans to recruit more Bangladeshi workers, says its Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. “We’ll recruit 18,000 more workers from Bangladesh in the first phase,” he said in a joint media briefing in Dhaka on Friday (October 4) after meeting Chief Adviser Dr Yunus.

Last year, Malaysia hired 351,683 Bangladeshis, which was 27 percent of the total overseas employment in 2023, according to government data.

Malaysia is a popular destination for Bangladeshis looking for overseas employment. The country is also one of the largest sources of remittances for Bangladesh.

Last year, Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia sent home $1,264.45 million (or 6 percent of the total remittance received that year).

Ibrahim came to Dhaka on a brief visit at the invitation of Dr Yunus. They held a brief one-to-one meeting at Dhaka airport, where Yunus said he was "very happy" to welcome his “old friend”.

During the meeting, the chief adviser spoke about the student-led movement that toppled the Awami League-led regime, sacrifices the students and people and the carnage committed by the previous government, his press wing said.

It is the first high-level visit by a head of government of any foreign country since the interim government led by Professor Yunus assumed office after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5.
