International Desk, Bangladesh Global: International relations analyst Imtiaz Ahmed says the Dr Yunus-led interim government may face US pressure to swiftly organise an election and return the country to a democratic process.
Humayun Kabir, the former Bangladesh ambassador to US, fears a decline in US assistance for Rohingyas currently living in Bangladeshi camps. He says Trump’s threats against the immigrants will be another headache.
“We need assistance as our economy is under pressure. The Biden administration has already extended help, which would’ve continued if Kamala Harris were elected. But Trump's policy is different. We might face a difficult situation if he decides differently on immigration or other areas of humanitarian aid,” Kabir said.
Just before the election, Trump condemned alleged violence against minorities, including Hindus, in Bangladesh. His tweet sparked speculations about frosty future ties but chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam said the election outcome won’t affect bilateral ties.
“Dr Mohammad Yunus is a global leader with friends in both the Democratic and Republican parties. So, whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump wins the election, there will be no challenge in our [bilateral] relationship,” he said.
Donald Trump has called his triumph in the US presidential election "a magnificent victory for the American people".
