Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will not attend Saturday’s (December 21) Bangladesh Muktijoddha Dal Rally in Dhaka because of illness, says the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“She’s been unwell since Tuesday night (December 17). She decided against joining the rally in person following her doctors’ advice,” he told the media at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office on Thursday (December 19).
Although Khaleda was released from prison after the Awami League-led government’s ouster, she did not participate in any programme in person. The former prime minister addressed the BNP’s Nayapaltan rally virtually on August 7.
Khaleda Zia joined the Armed Forces Day function on November 21. It was the first time in seven years that she physically attended a programme.
The BNP chief was convicted in two corruption cases and sent to jail. The Awami League-led government released her on parole on March 25, 2020.
The 79-year-old is suffering from various complications, including arthritis, heart disease, lung, liver, kidney, and diabetes. Khaleda underwent a successful surgery to implant a pacemaker on June 23 this year.
