ICT sentences Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for July crimes against humanity

Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) today convicted and sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in the crimes against humanity case over their superior command responsibility for offences committed during the July Mass Uprising.

The three-member panel, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, pronounced the judgment as it found guilty of the charges framed against them. The court also found another accused former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun guilty, but opted for "lenient sentence" of five years behind bars for his full disclosure of the events relating to the case as state witness.

The tribunal began pronouncing the judgment at 12:50pm. "This judgment is 453-page, divided into six parts. We will read out the summary in parts, and I will read the final portion. This will take around 40 minutes," the tribunal chairman said while reading out the judgement.

Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury started with his portion and continued until 1:10 pm, followed by Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmood who read the middle section till 1.56 pm. Tribunal chairman read out the sentencing portion and concluded at 2.45 pm.

Before delivering the judgment, Justice Mozumder thanked the Attorney General, the prosecution team, investigation agency, tribunal staff and journalists for their roles in the trial.
