Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that democracy must be protected every day, not just on the election day only.
"Everybody who believes in democracy must work with the same vigour even after the election. Democracy is not just for the Election Day, it should be the practiced every day," he said.
Fakhrul made this remark at a book launching and documentary screening event titled 'BNP in the '2024 Mass Uprising' held in a city hotel in Gulshan today.
BNP Secretary General said democracy must be a continuous social and political process. It is very crucial to create an environment of cultural tolerance and mutual respect to consolidate democracy, he said.
Fakhrul Islam also said, strong independent democratic institutions such as the judiciary, legislative, electoral body and media are needed to establish democracy.
“Democracy must be established in Bangladesh to bar the country to be a failed state,” he said.
The BNP leader said a certain group is working to split the consensus among anti-fascist forces. Everybody should be take care of it, he said.
Referencing the long political struggle and sacrifice of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, he said, their sacrifice is a great inspiration on the path to rebuild democratic institutions.
Party leaders, researchers, writers, and people from various professions attended the event. The event was concluded with unveiling the book and screening of a documentary.
