News Desk, Bangladesh Global: Bangladesh is observing a one-day state mourning today following the death of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, the spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho and a frontline fighter of the July Uprising. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus declared the state mourning on Thursday night. On the occasion, the national flag is being flown at half-mast in all government, semi-government, autonomous offices, educational institutions, government and private buildings and Bangladesh missions abroad.
Hadi's body was buried beside the grave of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam near the Central Mosque of Dhaka University at 3:50 PM, upon the request of family members. The coffin was taken to the grave wrapped in the national flag of Bangladesh after the namaz-e-janaza.
Hundreds of thousands of citizens performed the namaj-e-janaza of Inquilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi at the South Plaza of the Sangsad Bhaban. The Chief Adviser, numerous senior officials, politicians and people from all walks of life together performed Hadi's funeral in congregation as one of the largest funerals in Bangladesh history. Hadi's elder brother Mawlana Dr Abu Bakar Siddique administered the namaj-e-janaza and offered prayers seeking forgiveness of his departed soul. Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Zaber spoke on the occasion as well. The Chief Adviser also spoke on the occasion and Religious Affairs Adviser A F M Khalid Hossain read out the biography of Hadi.
Special prayers seeking forgiveness for Hadi’s departed soul were organised in every mosque across the country after Jumma prayers on Friday while other places of worship also arrange the prayers. Expressing deep sorrow and grief at Hadi’s untimely death, Chief Adviser Prof. Yunus said the loss is irreparable for the country’s political and democratic landscape. Hadi was an integral part of this process and his sole desire was to contest the upcoming elections and play an active role in the next phase of building a new Bangladesh, Prof. Yunus explained.
Sharif Osman Bin Hadi was an aspiring candidate for Dhaka-8 seat who was shot on December 12 after Jummah prayer and announced dead on December 18 in Singapore after extensive treatment. After reinforced security, the coffin was transferred through Hangar Gate No. 8 and taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases mortuary, where it was kept overnight.
