Fall of fascist government occurred through mass uprising: President in Parliament

Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: President Md. Sahabuddin stated that the Awami League government made Bangladesh a champion in corruption in his speech today during the first session of the 13th National Parliament. Shahabuddin said that the government has introduced family cards acting as a symbol of women's empowerment. The government is also implementing various other works.

"The fall of the fascist government occurred through mass uprising," he stated to highlight the activities of the interim government taken in memory of the July mass uprising and the July martyrs. The President also spoke about various activities of the current government.

The President said that after the end of a long one-and-a-half-decade fascist rule, the July-August 2024 student-people mass uprising is a unique milestone in the history of Bangladesh. He said that through the sacrifice of the blood of thousands of martyrs, a new democratic Bangladesh free from lackeys and fascism has begun.

The President said that in this movement, about 30,000 people were injured and crippled, and over five hundred people lost their eyesight. The government has provided 1,243 health cards to ensure treatment for the injured and has sent 137 seriously injured individuals abroad for advanced treatment. He mentioned in his speech that the work of establishing monuments in 64 districts and the July Uprising Memorial Museum in Dhaka to preserve the memory of the martyrs is ongoing.

The President added that the journey of this grand Parliament has begun today with elected representatives through a peaceful, free and impartial election. He mentioned that the spontaneous participation of the people in this election under the leadership of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman will remain a bright example in the history of democracy; and remembering the contribution of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, he said Begum Zia provided uncompromising leadership in establishing and protecting parliamentary democracy in the country.

Highlighting the country's economic situation, the President said, compared to the 2023-24 fiscal year, Bangladesh's economy has become much more stable in the 2024-25 fiscal year. In January 2026, inflation decreased to 8.58 percent, which is expected to decrease further in the coming days. He added that till February 19, 2026, foreign exchange reserves have risen to 34.78 billion US dollars. In his speech, the President mentioned strict measures for restoring good governance in the banking sector and investigating irregularities in the capital market.

Shahabuddin stated an economic reform commission will be formed to restore public confidence in the banking sector and control defaulted loans. Additionally, a separate commission will be formed for capital market reform which will investigate all irregularities that occurred during the fascist regime.
