Addressing a discussion meeting organised at the Jatiya Press Club on Saturday (May 4) on the occasion of World Free Media Day, Ali Arafat voiced concerns regarding the proliferation of what he termed ‘bad journalism’, which he asserted is detrimental to the integrity of genuine journalism. He underscored the need for regulatory measures to curb misinformation and ensure the preservation of professional journalistic standards.

Arafat highlighted the ongoing efforts to revise the media act, aiming to foster a conducive environment for credible journalism while safeguarding the freedom of the press.

Acknowledging the importance of media freedom, the state minister reassured the government's commitment to upholding it, asserting that media workers are allies in the quest for transparency and accountability.

He pledged to engage with media representatives to enact legislation that protects the rights and welfare of media professionals.

Amid the advocacy for media freedom, Arafat acknowledged the complexities inherent in modern journalism, particularly in navigating the influx of misinformation.

He emphasised the government's responsibility to address these challenges, including the formulation of laws to combat misinformation while ensuring they are not misused to suppress legitimate journalistic endeavours.

Arafat stressed the significance of environmental journalism in addressing pressing issues such as climate change and sustainability.

He announced plans to incentivise environmental reporting, recognising the pivotal role journalists play in raising awareness and fostering environmental stewardship.

Regarding access to information, Arafat affirmed the government's commitment to the Right to Information Act, vowing to facilitate journalists' access to public information.

He stressed the need for training to enhance journalists' capacity to utilize this legislation effectively, thus promoting transparency and accountability across sectors.

In response to queries regarding restrictions on journalists' access to institutions such as the central bank, Arafat emphasised the importance of balancing transparency with security concerns.

He pledged to align the government's policies with international standards while ensuring journalists' access to vital information is not unduly restricted.
